Poetry Slam     

Celebrating the works of Patrick Kavanagh, Brendan Behan and more. A Poetry Event Along the Grand Canal Dublin

About the Event

Theresa Kearney, Chairperson of the United Arts Club will lead the gathering in reading the poetry of Kavanagh, Behan and other Baggotonia writers to celebrate the Baggotonia Festival. Participants will read from such authors as, Patrick Kavanagh, Brendan Behan, Elizabeth Bowen, Samuel Beckett, Blanaid Salkeld, John Montague, Eavan Boland, Ethna MacCarthy, Thomas Kinsella and many more.

What is a Poetry Slam?

People will gather to read verses from the poets and writers of the Baggotonia era. There may even be some singing. Participants will include locals and luminaries and all are welcome. After the readings we will make an award to be the best and most memorable participants. If you wish to read as part of the Baggotonia Festival Poetry Slam please contact the organisers using the form below.  

Event Details

Time: The readings will commence promptly at 12:00 midday with speakers gathering at the Patrick Kavanagh sculpture on the banks of the canal (subject to access) or an alternative to be confirmed. Readings will be short and as little as a single verse is appreciated. This is the start of the 21st September’s festival day events.

Awards

All participants will be recognised for their efforts and notable readers will receive special mention on the day.  A bottle of bubbly will be awarded to the best and most memorable readings. This event is kindly also supported by Boojum on Mespil Road and there will be burritos and perhaps some bubbly for all to toast the proceedings.

How to Participate

If you wish to read please contact the organisers using the form below or by email connect@baggotonia-festival.com places are limited and the organisers will try to facilitate everyone if possible. To attend simply show up at the Patrick Kavanagh sculpture of the poet seated by the banks of the canal, everyone is welcome.

Not a poetry buff yourself? No problem! All are welcome to attend and experience the words of Kavanagh and Behan and others in the beauty of the surroundings. Don’t miss out on this unique celebration of poetry and what will be the raising of the spirits of Baggotonia!
