Wilton Gallery presents CONTINUUM (20 September – 4 October 2024), an exhibition that unites the work of several visual artists engaged in the practice of abstraction and neo-expressionism: Jenny Fox | Brian Gormley | Jeremy Houghton | Svetlana Lavery | Stephanie Sloan | Anthony Wigglesworth et al., | Jean Michel Basquiat
Although all exhibiting artists (Irish and International) are contemporary, the paintings, screens and digital prints encompass a reference to the canon of art history.
Dublin's Baggotonia artistic era influences the genesis of this exhibition. It celebrates the cultural movements of the past that challenge conventional narratives of the present.
Baggotonia broadly represents a place in or around Baggot Street that continues a radical flourishing of artistic and intellectual activity.
The design of this space at 46-48 Pembroke Road is to foster cultural exchange. Artworks are exhibited in a Georgian setting that sheds new light on contemporary art against a background of colours by Dulux Heritage Paints, which include Georgian as well as vibrant contemporary colours. Minima Home has collaborated by incorporating contemporary furniture pieces by European designers into the mix. BuildingLink Ireland has facilitated modern, sustainable lighting to enhance the display of the artworks. Lansdowne Hotel & Waterloo Pub has provided invaluable assistance with the space. This exhibition opens with paintings by Brian Gormley, primarily known for his large abstractions, especially his blackout works, partially inspired by his friend Jean Michel Basquiat’s work. The exhibition will also present recent works by Anthony Wigglesworth, who continues to work on wet-on-wet, striving to create a final image of abstraction that is rich and layered in texture. Svetlana Lavery explores diverse techniques to create exciting abstract and tactile works, using traditional brushstrokes to more experimental methods. The visual artist Jenny Fox continues to explore abstract painting technique and figurative draughtsmanship. She interrogates the pervasive influence of time on human experiences. Jeremy Haughton's use of negative space allows him to continue to eliminate and create abstract compositions; his collection of works here, among captivating landscapes of South Africa, continues his fascination with the wild, endangered flamingo birds that burst in colour. Stephanie Sloan’s new digital and screen prints explode with a new vibrancy and maturity, with amplified patterns celebrating growth. Her distinct draughtsmanship has a new sense of bold, brilliant confidence, making the floral motif a visual abstraction.
Also on display is a self-portrait attributed to Jean Michel Basquiat.
